SURROUNDINGS

CYCLIST SANCURY

Located along the famous Shimanami Kaido, the Cyclist Sanctuary on Omishima is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the islands by bike. As one of the most memorable stops along this iconic cycling route, the sanctuary was created to offer cyclists a place to rest, recharge, and fully experience the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea.

Thoughtfully designed with travelers in mind, the Cyclist Sanctuary provides a range of convenient amenities, including bike rental - both normal and electrical bikes - secure bike racks, comfortable seating areas, clean restrooms, and open spaces where you can stretch and relax. Whether you are cycling long distances or simply enjoying a leisurely ride between islands, it’s an ideal place to take a break and enjoy the calm surroundings. The scenic viewpoints nearby offer beautiful panoramas of the sea, the magnificent Tatara-bridge and surrounding islands, making it a perfect spot for photos or a quiet moment of reflection.

What makes this location even more special is its connection to the local community. Around the sanctuary, you will find a selection of small shops offering locally produced goods. These include fresh citrus fruits—one of the region’s specialties—as well as homemade snacks, artisanal products, and unique souvenirs that reflect the character of Omishima. Stopping here gives you the chance not only to rest, but also to discover the flavors and craftsmanship of the island while supporting local producers.

The Cyclist Sanctuary is more than just a practical stop; it represents the welcoming and social spirit of cycling culture along the Shimanami Kaido. Cyclists from all over the world pass through this point, creating a shared experience and a sense of connection between travelers. It’s common to see people exchanging stories, tips, and recommendations, adding a warm and human element to the journey.

Conveniently located on Omishima, it is easily accessible from our guesthouse, making it a perfect addition to your cycling adventure.

Rabbit Island

Located in the Seto Inland Sea, Ōkunoshima—often called “Rabbit Island”—is one of the most unique and memorable destinations in the region. Known for its hundreds of freely roaming rabbits, the island offers a magical experience that delights visitors of all ages, especially families with children.

From Omishima, reaching Ōkunoshima is simple and convenient. You can take a local boat directly from the island, and in just 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at this charming and peaceful destination. The short ferry ride itself is part of the experience, offering beautiful views over the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea and building excitement for what awaits on the island.

Ōkunoshima is particularly ideal for children. The cute rabbits roam freely and often approach visitors out of curiosity, creating a playful and interactive environment. Feeding the rabbits is a highlight for many families, and special food is available for purchase on the island. It’s a rare opportunity for children to connect with animals in a natural and safe setting, making it both fun and memorable.

The island is small and easy to explore, with well-maintained walking and cycling paths that circle the coastline. This makes it perfect for a relaxed day out with kids, whether you choose to walk, rent bicycles, or simply enjoy the beaches along the way. There are plenty of open spaces for children to play, as well as quiet spots for a picnic with a view of the sea.

Beyond its playful atmosphere, the island also has a deeper historical side. During World War II, Ōkunoshima was the site of a secret chemical weapons factory. Today, visitors can learn more about this past at the Ōkunoshima Poison Gas Museum. For families with older children, this can be an educational addition to the visit, offering insight into an important part of history.

Today, Ōkunoshima is a peaceful and welcoming island where nature, history, and fun come together. Its easy access, safe environment, and unique charm make it an ideal day trip for families staying on Omishima—an experience that both children and adults will remember long after their visit.

Shimanami Dome

The Shimanami Dome is not only a sports and community center, but also home to a relaxing onsen experience that visitors can truly enjoy.

While the dome itself is used for various sports and local activities, one of its hidden highlights is the onsen facility, where guests can unwind after a day of exploring the island or cycling along the Shimanami Kaido. The warm baths offer a perfect way to relax tired muscles, especially after a long ride or a day spent outdoors. With a calm and welcoming atmosphere, the onsen provides a glimpse into a beloved part of Japanese culture—simple, restorative, and deeply relaxing.

The experience is accessible and comfortable, making it suitable even for first-time visitors to an onsen. It’s an ideal place to slow down, enjoy the warmth of the water, and take a break from your daily routine while surrounded by the peaceful setting of the island.

One of the biggest advantages is its location. The Shimanami Dome is situated very close to our guesthouse, making it incredibly easy to visit at any time of day. Whether you want to start your morning refreshed or end your day in total relaxation, the nearby onsen is a convenient and enjoyable addition to your stay on Omishima.
